When Johnson & Johnson’s Risperdal antipsychotic was first introduced in 1993, it was touted as a safer alternative to more conventional antipsychotic medications like haloperidol, which had been around since the 1950s. Unfortunately, a number of studies have been published in recent years in which researchers identified Risperdal use as a potential risk factor for the development of serious and possibly even life-threatening complications. Hundreds of complaints have already been brought against Risperdal maker Johnson & Johnson over allegations that Risperdal caused personal injury, and the drug company has settled some of these claims for millions of dollars, including at least one complaint alleging gynecomastia side effects of Risperdal, and another alleging tardive dyskinesia complications. As more information is brought to light about the side effects potentially associated with the antipsychotic Risperdal, product liability lawyers across the country are investigating claims filed on behalf of consumers who believe they have been adversely affected by the medication.

Potential Risperdal Side Effects

Since Risperdal first came to the market in the United States, it has become one of the most widely prescribed antipsychotic drugs available. In fact, of the 54 million prescriptions filled for antipsychotic drugs during the 12 months ending in October 2011, Risperdal accounted for a whopping 23%. Unfortunately, mounting research has indicated that patients taking Risperdal to treat schizophrenia and other psychiatric disorders may have an increased risk of developing serious side effects, including:

  • Gynecomastia (male breast growth)
  • Stroke
  • Heart attack
  • Hyperglycemia
  • Diabetes
  • Tardive dyskinesia
  • Hyperosmolar coma

While some of these side effects are life-threatening, including heart attack and stroke, others, like diabetes and tardive dyskinesia, can result in long-term disability and costly medical expenses. With the help of a qualified attorney, side effect victims may be able to pursue compensation for these damages.

Psychological Trauma

In addition to other adverse medical events, Risperdal use is believed to be associated with gynecomastia, a condition characterized by abnormal breast growth in males. According to research, Risperdal has the potential to cause increased levels of prolactin, a hormone that regulates breast growth in milk production, which may result in spontaneous milk production in women. In men however, elevated prolactin levels can lead to abnormal growth of breast tissue, a connection that was first identified in a 1999 study published in the journal Psychopharmacology. Years later, a study published in April 2013 indicated that gynecomastia side effects can have a significant psychological impact on patients’ self-esteem, mental health and social functioning, possibly leading to increased feelings of loneliness, tension and restlessness. Risperdal users who have suffered psychological trauma related to abnormal breast growth or another side effect may be entitled to compensation for these damages.

Medical Procedures and Pain and Suffering

In addition to the immediate harm posed by side effects like heart attack and stroke, victims of such major medical events typically require emergency medical treatment, often including surgery, followed by recovery and sometimes long-term care as well. Unfortunately, this can result in costly medical bills and significant pain and suffering for both the victim and his or her family, particularly if the condition prevents a primary wage earner from returning to work and earning an income. Diabetes in particular requires daily monitoring of blood glucose levels and, in many cases, calls for consistent insulin administration and dramatic lifestyle changes, including weight loss, adherence to a diabetic diet and adequate exercise. Undergoing these medical procedures and implementing these dramatic changes can have a significant impact on a person’s life, especially if the treatment is ongoing, and victims may be entitled to compensation for this pain and suffering in cases where a potentially dangerous medication is believed to be at fault.
